Casper Network is a proof-of-stake Layer 1 blockchain designed for enterprise and institutional use, with a focus on bringing real-world assets onchain. Launched on mainnet in March 2021, Casper was built around developer accessibility (Rust, WebAssembly, and SDKs in mainstream languages) and enterprise-grade features like upgradeable smart contracts and protocol-level access control.

Casper's mission is to make blockchain usable for the real-world economy. As the team frames it, the goal is infrastructure that quietly powers business processes and gives agency to everyone, not just traders and developers. That means instant finality for legally meaningful settlement, permissions that mirror real business hierarchies, compliance built into the protocol, and software that can be upgraded without disruptive migrations.

🔵 A Brief History

Casper was developed by CasperLabs, founded in 2018 by Mrinal Manohar, Medha Parlikar, Michael Steuer, and Steve Careaga. Manohar, a Carnegie Mellon computer scientist turned Wall Street investor (Bain Capital, Sagard) and early Ethereum backer, served as CEO. Parlikar, a longtime engineering leader from Adobe and MP3 com, served as CTO. The project drew on the Correct-by-Construction (CBC) Casper research lineage associated with Ethereum's early proof-of-stake work.
The network launched on mainnet on March 30, 2021, following a CoinList sale at $0.015. The token reached an all-time high above $1.30 around launch during the broader bull market, then entered a prolonged multi-year decline as enterprise blockchain adoption proved slower than the sector promised.

In September 2024, the Casper Association (the Swiss non-profit that stewards the network) announced a significant leadership change. Co-founder Michael Steuer, who had laid out the original product vision in 2018 before stepping back in 2019 to run MAKE (the team behind core ecosystem infrastructure like CSPR live, Casper Wallet, CSPR cloud, and CSPR click), rejoined as President and CTO. A new board took over by December 1, 2024, with a mandate to move Casper toward community-led governance, including an on-chain voting mechanism and an annually elected board.

Under the new leadership, Casper 2.0 went live in May 2025 with Zug Consensus, following a four-month security collaboration with Halborn. Through 2025 and 2026, Casper joined the ERC-3643 Association for compliant tokenization (October 2025), launched an on-chain AI Toolkit (June 2026), and published the Casper Manifest, a multi-year roadmap covering EVM compatibility, gasless transactions, compliant security tokens, smart accounts with biometric authentication, and quantum-safe cryptography.
