There are two ways to stake on Bittensor.

They carry completely different risk profiles.

Root stake

Delegating TAO directly to a validator without buying into a specific subnet.

Zero risk to your principal.

Your TAO never leaves your wallet. It sits on your hotkey the entire time.

Validators with high VTrust across as many subnets as possible earn the highest root returns.

Alpha stake

Buying a specific subnet's token directly.

Your alpha holdings will always increase over time.

But the exchange rate between TAO and that subnet's alpha token fluctuates.

You can end up with more alpha tokens and still take a net loss if the price moved against you.
