A formal decision by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications is expected soon. The subsidies will be provided over the course of three years. Rakuten, whose businesses include wireless communications and e-commerce, will partner with U.S. satellite communications company AST SpaceMobile to build a direct-to-mobile satellite network in Japan. The government will subsidize equipment procurement, as well as the establishment of ground facilities for launching and controlling a constellation of multiple low-orbit satellites.
